There is a lot of figurative language in The Fault In Our Stars. One example is, "You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing," on page 20. This is a metaphor because he puts the thing that could kill him in his mouth but it doesn't let it kill him. Another example is, "I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up..." On page 225. This is a metaphor because he's describing his cancer journey in roller coaster form. Another figurative language example is, "I remember once early on when I couldn't get my breath and it felt like my chest was on fire." On page 262. This is a simile because she uses the word like to symbolize how she's feeling. Another example of figurative language is, "Here it was that great and terrible ten, slamming me again and again." On page 263. This is personification because she is giving something without human capabilities, human capabilities. Another example of figurative language is, "I realize that this is the kind of deep question you always hoped your readers would ask- what becomes of Sisyphus the Hamster?" On page 70. This is a hyperbole because the hamster is one of the less important things and Hazel is trying to make a big deal out of it. Another example of figurative language is, "I wanted to not be a grenade..." On page 172. This is a metaphor because she describes her life as a grenade, so when she dies the grenade will blow up and hurt the people around her. Another example of figurative language is, "shadows of the branches intersecting and coming apart on the concrete." On page 210. This is a metaphor because the experience they had with Van Houten was so bad that something so beautiful can be so close to something that is bad happening. Another example of figurative language is, "No, you threw it like twenty feet over the car." On page 228. This is a simile because he is expressing how bad he missed the car by saying he missed it by twenty feet. Another example of figurative language is, "He took hold of my wrist, like I was a two-year-old about to out into the street..." On page 254 and 255. This is a simile because she explains that her dad grabbed her wrist the same way he would to a two year old about to run into the street, using like. The last example is, "The last time so many people saw us kiss, we were in the Anne Frank House." On page 270. This is an allusion because she is reminiscing her time with Gus and using a real place.
